Making Waves.

Today, a piece I wrote for the Monticello Times was published. Check it out here.

Please read it and find out why for the last six weeks my littles and I have been eating lunch in a nearby coffee shop instead of inside the community center between swimming lessons and preschool.

And while you're there, give me your two cents. I'd love to know how others feel.

Happy rainy Thursday!

*Updated: here's a link to the Community Center's current concession menu, wish I would have included that in my story.

It seems that you're over reacting. I feed my children there - they have fruit, yogart and healthy snacks. Given, I don't feed them MEALS.. but they do have healthy and AFFORDABLE options.

I think you're a bit melodramatic and need to lighten up a bit.

Don't give up! Thank goodness there are some people out there who are willing to ask questions about "policies." Especially with the economy the way it is... seriously, let us bring our own food for the health of our children. Keep up the great work!

That's an awesome article! I know what you mean, there were so many community centers that I've been too when I've worked in the daycares and they don't have healthy options and if they do, they are the higher priced options on the menu. Why should people who want to be healthy be penalized for higher cost food? It's not right. Way to go for taking a stand and standing up and fighting what your beliefs!!!

My family eats almost exclusively organic food. We pack our own lunches for most of our adventures and outings, not only because it is less expensive, but also because it is very difficult to find healthy food when we are out and about.

Even if we read signs that state we cannot bring our own food, we still do.

I think you are providing a great service to many families that would like to pack lunches for their children. Lots of people don't speak up, but I think YOU are doing something great for the health and well-being of many people.

You are NOT being melodramatic. You are not asking the center to stop selling junk food. You are only asking for the simple privilege of bringing your own allergen-free, healthy foods for your family.

Keep it up!

All sorts of public kid/family friendly places allow people to bring in their own food (childrens museum, the zoo, science museum, moa) This is a way that businesses take care of their customers. I hope that the community center will gain some business savvy from this situation and realize that listening and trying to resolve customer issues and keep their customers happy, returning, and feeling valued is the way you grow your business. Good luck Monticello...I am guessing there are a lot of business savvy individuals out there right now that would love a job right now and a chance to grow your business and serve the surrounding community.

I'm shocked the somebody said you are being melodramatic. The place where we can make a true difference and be heard is within our community. Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention. I'm hoping it will spark others to take action.

Great article!

The "healthiest" thing on the menu looks to be fruit snacks. SNACKS. Not a meal.

Good luck with the battle.
